Syderstone lies approximately 10 miles from the North Norfolk coast and is 7.5 miles from the market town of Fakenham. On its south side stretches the extensive common spanning roughly 4 miles and is a haven for wildlife including the rare Natterjack Toad.
The historic round towered parish church of St. Mary’s dates back to the Norman era and is mentioned in the Doomsday book.
Syderstone Village Hall plays an important role and position in village life as a community hub. Formerly the village school, the building commands a prominent position opposite the church and on the junction between The Street and Mill Lane. The hall is known locally as the Amy Robsart Village Hall. The village has a long association with Amy Robsart who was allegedly was born in Syderstone. Her initials ‘AR’ appear on the church gates. In 1549 she married Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester and her sudden death in 1560 led to suspicion that she may have been murdered by her husband thus freeing him to potentially marry Elizabeth I. Sir Walter Scott’s novel ‘Kenilworth’ was later based on this suspicion.
Syderstone is situated close to the picturesque villages of North and South Creake and the popular town of Burnham Market lies a little further away towards the beautiful North Norfolk Coast.
